WHY CHOOSE ART AND DESIGN?
As the famous artist, Pablo Picasso once said ‘The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.’ This is so true. As creative students you will be meeting with a vast array of exciting challenges that are designed to expand your imagination. The course is designed to stretch your understanding of art through a series of design briefs which allow students to build on their strength but also take risks with the support and experience of the subject teachers, who are all practising artists.
Students have the opportunity to work with paint, sculpture, print, installation, conceptual, textiles, drawing and mix media. Through looking at the work of others and investigating art history students are able to reflect and build of their own style.
The design briefs help students not only achieve an artistic outcome but also become better problem solvers by thinking outside the box. Art also helps students have a better self-awareness through the requirement to develop from their own experience and an ability to express themselves. The qualities are skills for life.
The department offers a range of additional opportunities such as arts weekends, open access and life drawing classes. These opportunities are optional but incredibly popular with our Sixth Form in preparation for creating an extensive portfolio of work that showcases their many talents.
