WHY CHOOSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
Because a challenge is good for the mind and body! An opportunity to be the best you can be. It involves a mixture of practical and theory work studying areas from a variety of scientific and cultural disciplines, from biology and psychology, through to socio-culture and history. You will develop the skills of a scientist as well as those of a practical performer. Physical Education makes a fantastic subject choice and combines well with many other subjects.
AIMS OF THE COURSE
You will develop your knowledge & skills in selected activities. Exploring contemporary sociological issues in modern sport & looking at the effects of exercise on training & performance so that you can analyse how you can develop skills. You will compare & contrast sport in differing cultures & look at the role of technology or psychology in sporting performance. You will find ways to improve your own performance through greater understanding.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
AS – An introduction to Physical Education – Theory unit – You will cover three different units:
1 – Anatomy & Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills. This develops a deeper understanding of the body, how it moves, works & helps you understand the functions of the physiological systems in the body. You will learn about the brain and how it processes information to improve performance.
2 – Socio-cultural studies – this looks at cultural factors, barriers to sport, funding of sport & how the media impacts sport & physical activity.
3 – Evaluation & Improving Performance (Practical Unit) – You will improve & develop your understanding of fitness. You will be assessed on two sports by taking part in an interview to improve performance.
A2 – Principles and Concepts Across Different Areas of Physical Education (Theory Unit) – You will cover three different units: 1. Historical Studies; 2. Sports Psychology; 3. Exercise Physiologies. You will be assessed on one sport and take part in a verbal interview that will test your knowledge of the theoretical units at AS & A2.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
AS – 1 Exam: 60% (2hrs)
A2 – 1 Exam: 60% (2.5hrs)
