LEVEL: A Level – Linear
EXAM BOARD: OCR
WHY CHOOSE PHYSICS?
Across the country, of all the A Levels taken over the last 5 years only 4% of them were Physics! Yet Physics is a widely accepted qualification for any area in which numeracy and logical thinking are important, including business. Be one of the few people with this qualification and stand out.
Physics is the fascinating study of how the Universe works on a fundamental scale. It requires an inquisitive mind and in return rewards you with a deeper understanding of how the world functions. From the forces experienced on a daily basis to the enigmatic quarks and photons that make up the microscopic Universe, via black holes, nuclear fusion and the physics of your television! The subject matter offers endless
opportunities for learning.
A Level Physics also promotes and develops many skills that will be essential in any number of future careers or academic courses. A fondness for mathematics is essential, as we apply mathematical reasoning to the workings of the Universe and it is through this that numeracy and logical thinking is developed. In addition, you will apply your problem-solving skills to a wide range of situations, both practical and theoretical, which will enhance your independent thinking and your resilience.
AIMS OF THE COURSE
- To give a broad understanding of laws of nature that govern our Universe
- To give depth of understanding within some very important areas of the laws of nature
- To develop a competency in using experimental evidence to develop theories
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Year 1: Foundations of Physics; Mechanics; Waves; Electricity; Quantum Physics.
Year 2: Circular Motion and Oscillations; Gravitational, Electric and Magnetic Fields; Thermal Physics; Astrophysics; Medical Physics; Nuclear and Particle Physics.
In addition, we develop practical skills in physics throughout the two years.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
For AS, two exams at the end of Year 1:
Breadth in Physics (1h 30m; 50%)
Depth in Physics (1h 30m; 50%)
For A2, three exams at the end of Year 2:
Modelling Physics (2h 15m; 37%)
Exploring Physics (2h 15m; 37%)
Unified Physics (1h 30m; 26%)
We provide course text books for a deposit of £20 per year (fully refundable on the return of the books in appropriate condition)
WHERE CAN IT LEAD?
The skill set that is naturally developed throughout the course of an A Level in Physics can take you anywhere!
For those with a real passion for the subject, it can lead to various degrees in Physics at University; but it is also a commonly-studied subject by those wishing to go on to engineering, architecture, various medical courses and other science-related degrees. Physics is also viewed upon very highly by other careers outside the sciences due to the skills required to be successful in the subject. It is therefore known as a facilitating subject because it opens doors to any area of employment or academia.
