Aims of the Course:

  • GCSE Design and Technology will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors.
  • Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.

Course Outline:

GCSE Design and Technology: Resistant Materials helps students develop the ability to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques.
This course requires students to develop their knowledge of woods, metals, plastics and composite materials. Other materials may also be used and the use of new technologies is also encouraged.
This course has 50% controlled assessment in order to recognise the importance of practical work within this subject
Students will be enthused and challenged by the range of practical activities possible. A working knowledge of woods, metals, plastics and composite materials will be required, but other materials may be used in addition. The use of new technologies is encouraged in this course.

All equipment is provided in school, although the following may be helpful:

Drawing equipment – 2H pencil, eraser, 30cm rule, technical compass, set squares (45’ and 60’) technical drawing pens, coloured pencils.
